Embark on a spiritual and adventurous journey through the mystical Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The Chandrashila, Chopta, Tungnath, and Deoria Tal circuit is more than just a trek; it’s an immersion into pristine nature, ancient legends, and breathtaking mountain vistas. This trail is a perfect choice for both seasoned trekkers and beginners seeking an unforgettable Himalayan experience.
Chopta: The “Mini Switzerland of India”
Chopta, a charming village at an altitude of approximately 2,680 meters, is the gateway to this magnificent trek. Surrounded by dense forests of deodar, pine, and rhododendron, its rolling green meadows have earned it the nickname “Mini Switzerland of India.”
Key Highlights: Chopta is the ideal base camp for the region’s treks. Its tranquil environment offers a much-needed break from city life, with panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. In spring (April-May), the meadows burst into a riot of colors with blooming rhododendrons, creating a truly spectacular sight.
Access: Chopta is well-connected by road, with the nearest railway station in Rishikesh and the nearest airport at Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun.
Tungnath: The World’s Highest Shiva Temple
From Chopta, a well-marked trek of about 3.5 km leads to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world. Located at an impressive altitude of 3,680 meters, this ancient stone temple is a vital part of the sacred Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit.
The Legend: The temple’s history is tied to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It is believed that after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas built this temple to appease Lord Shiva. Tungnath is where the arms (Bahu) of the bull-form of Shiva are said to have reappeared.
The Trek: The trail to Tungnath is considered easy to moderate, making it accessible to most people with a reasonable fitness level. The path winds through lush meadows and forests, offering continuous views of majestic peaks.
Chandrashila: The Summit of a Spiritual Journey
A further 1.5 km steep climb from Tungnath leads to the summit of Chandrashila Peak. At an altitude of about 4,000 meters, the name “Chandrashila” translates to “Moon Rock,” a reference to a local legend.
The View: The summit offers an unparalleled 360-degree panoramic view of the mighty Himalayas. From this vantage point, you can witness the breathtaking sunrise over iconic peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedar Peak, a sight that will stay with you forever.
Spiritual Significance: According to local beliefs, this is the very place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon king Ravana.
Deoria Tal: The Lake of the Gods
Accessible from the village of Sari, Deoria Tal is a stunning emerald lake nestled at an altitude of 2,438 meters. This serene lake is a short and pleasant trek from Sari and offers a magnificent sight.
The Legend: Deoria Tal is also associated with the Mahabharata. It is believed to be the place where the Pandavas were questioned by the Yaksha, a nature spirit, on their way to exile.
The View: The lake’s calm, clear waters offer a perfect reflection of the surrounding Chaukhamba and other peaks, making it a photographer’s dream. It’s a popular camping site and a beautiful starting or ending point for the trek.
Planning Your Trek: Best Time to Visit
The Chandrashila, Chopta, Tungnath, and Deoria Tal trek can be experienced in various seasons, each offering a unique charm.
Summer (May-June): The most popular time for trekking. The weather is pleasant, and the trails are clear. The region is in full bloom with vibrant rhododendrons.
Post-Monsoon (September-November): Another excellent time to visit. The skies are clear, providing crystal-clear views of the Himalayan peaks. The air is crisp and the landscape is lush.
Winter (December-March): For those seeking a snow adventure, this is the time to go. The entire region is covered in a pristine blanket of snow, turning the trek into a thrilling winter wonderland. Be prepared for cold temperatures and potential trail closures.
Important Note: The Tungnath temple remains closed from November to April due to heavy snowfall. However, the trek to the temple and Chandrashila Peak is still possible for winter trekking enthusiasts with proper gear and guidance.
